Add a Note to a Data Point

This applies to: Managed Dashboards, Managed Reports

All users with the Note privilege can add and reply to notes on a dashboard or on any other view that they have access to.

To add a note to a data point:

  1. Select Note on the toolbar if the toolbar is visible, or right-click (or long-tap) a data point and choose Add Note. The note bar opens below the main toolbar.

  2. Enter your note in the note bar.

If you used the toolbar to add a note, the entry field is red. Select a data point in the visualization to attach the note to that data point. You can select any data in the visualization that represents a measure value (number).

  3. After you've entered your note, select the padlock icon to change who can see the note. Cycle through the options to select the one you need, then select Apply to confirm your selection.

    • Select public to make viewable to all users
    • Select private to make viewable only to you
    • Select custom to define custom permissions
  4. Optionally, define custom permissions in the Security work area if you selected custom. See Edit Security Permissions for a Note.

The note appears next to the data point and can be viewed, edited or deleted based on the security permissions specified. Hover over the note to see its details in a popup.

Notes are attached to this particular data in the data cube source itself, and will follow it when the data point moves when filtering or sorting, when a different visualization is used, or when another metric set using the same data cube displays this data point.

View note details in a different visualization

  1. Open the data in another visualization, or right-click the chart then select Re-Visualize, and Table. The data appears in table format.

  2. Scroll through the table until you see the annotated data point cell with a small red triangle in the upper-right corner of the cell.

  3. Hover your pointer over the triangle to view the note you just created.

You can be notified when someone adds a note to a metric set if you're expecting someone to add one or reply to one of yours. See Symphony Alerts.
